Acquaint Yourself With God

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.” (Job 22:21, KJV)

Acquaint now yourself with Him [agree with God and show yourself to be conformed to His will] and be at peace; by that [you shall prosper and great] good shall come to you.” (Job 22:21, AMP)

To acquaint yourself with God means to familiarise yourself with Him and live in harmony with Him. It involves getting to know God and His ways, and choosing to please Him by walking in submissiveness to His Word. As the Amplified version of Job 22:21 says, it is “showing yourself to be conformed to God’s Will”. In a nutshell, acquainting yourself with God entails developing a personal lifestyle of doing as the Bible says in 1 John 2:6, “He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.”

Acquainting Yourself with God is a Personal Choice

Being a Christian does not automatically make you an acquaintance of God, it just opens the door for you to choose to take further steps of personal commitment that will help you to acquaint yourself with God.

Choosing to acquaint yourself with God is the most important decision you can make as a Christian because it is the foundation of success in all aspects of your life. Being in harmony with God positions you to enjoy God’s input in all aspects of your life just like a branch that is closely attached to a vine enjoys unhindered flow of sap from the vine. Jesus clearly revealed this truth when He said, Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5).

How to Acquaint Yourself with God

The way you acquaint yourself with God is by regularly fellowshipping with Him in His Word and prayer, and choosing to obey Him in everything. Whenever you sincerely study and meditate in the Word of God, and commune with God in prayer, the Holy Spirit faithfully reveals God and His ways to your heart. Such Holy Spirit inspired revelation knowledge of God helps you to become clear about what choices you need to make in order to please God.

Acquainting with God is based on personal relationship with Him and is characterised by obedience to His Word. Jesus clearly reveals to us that genuine relationship shows itself through obedience when He said to His disciples that, Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” (John 15:14). The word “if” in that verse of Scripture signifies a conditional choice that must be made before one can be called a friend or an acquaintance of Jesus! This shows that God’s requirement of us is more than mere religion or just paying lip service to Christianity. God requires obedience from every one of us!

Benefits of Acquainting Yourself with God

  • GOOD will come to you (Job 22:21). In other words, good things will come to you from God as a reward for acquainting yourself with Him. Blessings of God are always conditionally based on obedience to Him. In Deuteronomy 28:1-14 God highlights tremendous blessings that will “pursue” and “overtake” anyone who hearkens to and obeys His Word. What a good way to get God’s blessings in your life. Instead of you pursuing the blessings, the blessings will be pursuing you!
  • Your life will be built up and restored perfectly by God (Job 22:23). As you choose to draw closer to God in intimacy, He will respond by drawing closer to you in return! As it is written, “Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you.” (James 4:8). Now, the closer you and God get together, the more easily He can have access to your life to work His perfect will for you!
  • God will fill your life with His Divine treasures which are greater than earthly treasures that you can amass on your own (Job 22:24-26). This is why Jesus also said, But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33).
  • You will enjoy the benefit of answered prayers (Job 22:27). The relationship between walking in intimacy with God and enjoying the reward of answered prayers is clearly revealed throughout the Bible. For example, in Psalm 91, one of the benefits that is promised to someone who “dwells in the secret place of the Most High” is that, “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.” (Psalm 91:15).
  • You will walk in God’s Authority and Favour (Job 22:28). Acquainting yourself with God makes your heart and the heart of God to become as one. This is because your heart’s desire and delight become centred absolutely on pleasing God. It is this unity of your heart with God’s Heart that gives you access to God’s favour and authority in your life. As it is written, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalm 37:4).
  • You will be able to successfully intercede before God for others (Job 22:29-30). We see this truth clearly in Genesis 18:23 and 25 when Abraham, whom the Bible calls God’s friend, interceded before God in prayer to save righteous Lot from the destruction of Sodom. We also see another example in Acts 27:21-26 when Paul’s intercessory prayers saved the whole crew that was with him on the ship that suffered shipwreck.
